Born and raised in Chicago\, Illinois\, McCarthy joined the Secret Service in 1972\, embarking on a career that epitomized bravery and service. \nHe is best known for his heroic actions on March 30\, 1981\, when an assassination attempt was made on President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. In a split-second decision\, McCarthy placed himself in the line of fire\, shielding the president with his own body and taking a bullet to the abdomen. His selfless act helped save Reagan’s life and cemented his legacy as a symbol of the Secret Service’s commitment to protecting the nation’s leaders.
